Standard Days Method or SDM prevents pregnancy by avoiding unprotected vaginal sex during most fertile days i.e., on days 8 through 19 of a woman’s cycle. In this case, a woman should keep track of her menstrual cycle, which is usually 28 days, and only have sex on days 1-7 and from Day 20 to whenever her periods start. This method is dependent on regular menstrual cycles that last from 26-32 days. This is riskier than other Family Planning methods if the woman has two or more menstrual cycles of less than 26 or more than 32 Days within any 1 year of SDM use. Withdrawal or the pullout method “is the least effective” family planning method. In this method, a man takes his penis out of a woman’s vagina before he ejaculates so fewer/no sperm get inside. It is not encouraged as a modern method to avoid pregnancy because sperm may enter the vagina if withdrawal isn’t properly timed or if pre-ejaculation fluid contains sperm. It is best to use this method when combined with other methods. This is not a very effective method to rely on. When a woman breastfeeds at least every 4 hours during the day and every 6 hours at night and only breast milk is fed to your baby — her body stops ovulating and menstruating normally. You can’t get pregnant if you don’t ovulate. This method can work very well with 98% efficiency as long as you exclusively feed the baby breast milk and do not mix this with formula milk. It will not work if you use a breast pump. The breastfeeding method is only effective for the first 6 months of a baby’s life, or until your period returns, whichever comes first. Start using another contraceptive the moment your period returns, or 6 months are up.
